    Psychological Factors

    Psychological factors are the root cause of erectile dysfunction in about 10% to 20% of cases. In such circumstances, a patient is said to have psychogenic erectile dysfunction. Stress, relationship problems, or psychological illnesses can impair the signals from the brain that initiate the chain of biological events needed for an erection. Often, the fundamental problem is anxiety or depression. One study found that erectile dysfunction is nearly twice as common among depressed men as it is among those who aren't depressed. Other causes include stress, guilt, low self-esteem, and fear of sexual failure. Learn More ›

  • Other Culprits of ED

    Other problems that can lead to erectile dysfunction include the following:

    Prostatitis. This inflammation of the prostate gland can be either acute (usually caused by a bacterial infection) or chronic (usually not caused by an infectious agent). Symptoms include pain during urination, more frequent urination, and — possibly — a discharge from the penis or fever. Severe prostatitis can directly cause erectile dysfunction. In milder forms, the condition can produce painful ejaculation, which can certainly interfere with sexual pleasure and may lead to erectile dysfunction. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat the problem, but it can take several weeks for the infection to clear and for normal erections to return. Learn More ›
